Louisiana's  flag shows a large pelican feeding her young.  The pelican has been a symbol of Louisiana for over 200 years.  Early settlers believed it was a generous and nurturing bird.  It was said that when food was scarce the mother bird would actually stab her breast with her beak and feed some of her blood to her young.
